Why the island costs double, and what that actually buys
The marketMiyajima has a very small number of beds and almost no business hotels. What it has instead is ryokan — traditional inns quoting a per-person rate that includes dinner and breakfast — and that is the whole explanation for the price gap.
So the comparison people make is wrong before it starts. A ¥9,500 business room in Hiroshima with a kettle is not the same product as a per-person island rate with a kaiseki dinner and a served breakfast. Read the total for your party before concluding the island is expensive; then read it again, because per-person pricing does unpleasant things to a family of four.
As an indication of the gap and not a quote: Booking's own listings start around ¥12,000 for Miyajima and roughly ¥5,500 for Hiroshima city. Treat those as a signal of the floor, check live rates for your dates, and expect November to behave like a different market entirely.
Hiroshima Prefecture introduced a ¥200 per person per night accommodation tax on 1 April 2026, on rooms of ¥6,000 or more per person before tax and meals. It applies across the prefecture — the city, Miyajima, Onomichi — and it is not included in prepaid booking totals, so you will be asked for it at check-in. There is no separate Hiroshima city lodging tax.
What the premium buys is time, not comfort. The island's whole commercial apparatus shuts between 16:00 and 18:00 — Senjōkaku at 16:30, the ropeway's last descent at 16:30, Daishō-in and the Treasure Hall at 17:00, Itsukushima Shrine at 18:00 — and the day-trippers go with it. The illuminated torii comes on 30 minutes after sunset and stays lit until 23:00. And the shrine reopens at 06:30, about two and a half hours before the first ferry crowds land, which is the single best hour on the island and cannot be bought any other way.
The honest caveat that most overnight arguments skip: the last JR ferry off the island is 22:14. You can see the illumination and leave. What you cannot do on a day trip is the 06:30 morning.
