Outdoors, a guide earns their fee: the monuments have thin signage and no narrative between them. HIP, ~¥4,000 for two guides
About 1.5 hours of English commentary outdoors from an organisation that has been doing this since 1984, for roughly ¥25 a head in a pair. It fixes exactly the thing self-guiding cannot: the monuments joined into one argument. Take their advice and do the museum first.
Self-guided, free
Perfectly coherent if you have read a page like this one first and know what the Flame, the Cenotaph and the Children's Peace Monument are. Without any preparation you get an hour of pleasant riverside walking and very little else. Free is the right price for a second visit.
Hiroshima Peace Volunteers, and the suspension
The free option nobody explainsThe Hiroshima Peace Volunteers are museum-affiliated and free. They give commentary in the park, and this is the option most blogs point at without checking its current status. The museum states that in-museum exhibit commentary is currently suspended — so if you turn up expecting a volunteer to walk you through the galleries, that is not what is on offer right now. Confirm at the information desk on the day rather than planning around it.
That suspension is the whole reason the ¥500 audio guide matters. Indoors, it is the only guided commentary reliably available, and it covers about 70 minutes in 15 languages.
The other free option is not a tour at all: the daily English testimony talk at 13:00, 60 minutes, no booking. It is the single highest-value hour in the park and it is covered in full on the testimony page. Do not pay for a tour that overlaps it without checking.
